Tattoo Design

  1. How do media artists generate ideas? 
  2. How do media artists organize and develop ideas and models into process structures to achieve the desired end product?
  3. How do media artists improve/refine their work?


Assignment: To design and develop your own to using both Illustrator and Photoshop


Objectives:


  • Pick two of your favorite things to create a composition and idea around
  • Create an original design using both Illustrator and Photoshop to add color
  • Color must show airbrushing techniques and value
  • Line weights must vary to show interest
  • Must show texture in one piece within the tattoo
  • Live tracing may be used in no more than 30% of your piece

Steps: 

  1. Read this short article - How to Design your own Tattoo 
  2. Brainstorm ideas and layouts (how would your ideas piece together?)
  3. Draw a base to scan in and build over or begin to create piece in Illustrator using only black or deep blue line
  4. Vary line weights and add in pieces of texture
  5. Bring final design into Photoshop to apply color through airbrushing (Do not use gradients for all, blend through use of the paintbrush)
  6. Class Critique
  7. Refine design and color
  8. Print on temporary tattoo paper (design must be flipped backwards for printing)
  9. apply tattoo and photograph
  10. Post both design and photograph to blog with a short reflection
