Independent Project
Note from Mrs. Donovan:
This is your chance to do whatever you want and to think and develop your skills! Once you turn in your proposal (which must come first!!!!) and get my approval for the project you may not switch your project. You may improve upon it or change things in order to solve problems but you may not change the intended piece. Take the time to really think about it but remember this is up to you….Please avoid statement like “I don’t know what to do” and “I hate this project” as these are common statement when faced with creating your own work. Those statements usually come out when you are not truly thinking about all of the possibilities...and remember your first idea is usually not your best. You should work on advancing your skills or learning something new. I do not want to see something too easy!
Assignment: To wrap up the school year I want you to develop an independent project that you can work on over a 2-3 week period. You are to develop a concept for a project that is not too close to something you have already done. You may take something that you have done and use it as a jumping off point but it must be changed to become either much more advanced or twisted into something new. You may work in mixed media, digital art, build a mock up, etc.
Grades:
- Written Proposal (project development grade) I want a sketch or google doc describing your plan so that I may approve it and be able to understand it without you "just telling me."
- Final Piece (project grade) overall grade on final printed or built piece
- Artist Statement (project development grade) a final written piece posted to your blog with image of your final project using the Artist Statement Handout as your guide

Check out this video: How to Create Infographics Part 1
Steps:
- Decide on a topic
- Narrow the topic down to a specific focus

- Take the information you have gathered and break it up into categories or groups
- Start sketching a visual idea to be created in Illustrator
- Develop ideas for small icons through your research which can be used in your design
- Sketch a layout for the entire graphic which shows your visuals, a title, and the information placement as well as a specific size
- Start Designing
- Choose a color theme (stick to it throughout for a cohesive look)
- Make sure to use grid theory (like your magazine) and alignment
- You may use Photoshop only to add fx to text or to a texture into the design
Assessment: (2 Project Grades)
You will be graded on the research (layout and icon sketch, google docs information and citations) as well as the overall design
- Brainstorm/Sketch
- Research
- Creativity
- Software/Design
- Citation

Digital Art: Music into Art
Objective: Create and Design a digital abstract piece of artwork inspired by music with a focus on pattern development, shape/form, and color
EU: abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
National Standard: Visual Art/Creating
Shape an artistic investigation of an aspect of present-day life using contemporary practice of art and design.
EQ: How can you, as a designer, look into the world of synesthesia to create a digital work of abstract art?
Kandinsky
Composition VIII
1923
Peter Balkov
Assignment Steps:
- Choose one of your favorite songs to inspire your work (appropriate for school)
- Start by listening to the music with your eyes closed and begin to figure out what you are seeing, when you see it, and break apart the sounds and rhythms that you hear.
- Brainstorm on paper the colors, the shapes, and the composition you may start with
- Using Illustrator and/or Photoshop, begin to build your design (size is up to you)
- Work in varying levels to push the concept
Assessment:
- Rough Draft: Hand sketch or quick computer sketch
- Overall Design
- 1 page written reflection (use google docs to share with me) that is copied and pasted to blog post with design discussing the following questions in no particular order. Do not copy and paste the questions. I would like them in an essay format.
- What song and artist did you choose? Why?
- When you closed your eyes could you see color and design?
- Did certain parts of the song stand out to you over others?
- Were there certain parts of the song that you felt strongly about illustrating?
- How did you decide on your particular composition?
- Describe some of the shapes, patterns, and colors you chose and why.
- Do you think that you were able to get the image in your head into an artwork?

Note from Mrs. D: This is absolutely not an easy assignment. Getting something out of your head onto the page is harder than you think. It is so important to really spend some time to listen to the music, to visualize, and to sketch out some of your thoughts before you begin.
